HES DESIGNERS HAD THE EDGE OVER THE COMPETITION AT STATE-WIDE ASID STUDENT CONTEST

    9/11/2018

Four interior design students from UA stole the show at the 2018 Daisy Bond Student Design Awards on Friday, Sept.7. Claire Gustafson, Sara Onks, Carly Roberts and Logan Glover won 12 of the coveted awards at the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) Alabama chapter Impact Celebration in Birmingham.

The celebration was the culmination of a day-long conference that included a product exhibition, educational CEUs in which students participated, a keynote address by Jennifer Quail, Editor-in-Chief of i+D Magazine and a social media talk for students and emerging professionals.  Students also had portfolio time to meet with professionals and receive feedback.  ASID student chapter faculty advisor, John Peaslee, and instructor, Casey Faulkner, shared the conference experience with HES students.

Congratulations to our hard-working, talented students!

Natalie Rye, a 2017 graduate with a degree in Fashion Retailing, won the Fall 2016 Mood Tote Design Challenge sponsored by Mood Fabrics in New York. Mood Designer Fabrics, with stores in New York City and Los Angeles, was made famous on the hit television show Project Runway. The national design competition was open to all persons 18 years and older and was promoted through Mood Fabrics' social media channels.

Natalie submitted a design featuring the store's official mascot, Swatch the dog, wearing a pair of blue sunglasses. The public was invited to vote for their favorite design via 'likes' on Facebook. Natalie's design made it through two rounds of voting to emerge the winner! Natalie retains ownership of her design for other purposes and the tote bag is available for purchase on the Mood Fabrics website.  They have since used her design to promote the next design challenge.

Our forward-thinking faculty empower students with the tools they need to meet challenges with resolve, confidence and creativity. We invite you to explore our website further to learn more about our programs, our faculty and our college. And don't miss our Facebook page  to see everything that's happening in CHES!

    Joseph Rowland Award Winner

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama’s College of Human Environmental Sciences presented Brian Taylor with the Joseph Rowland Teaching Award at its Homecoming Convocation Sept. 30.
The award is given annually to recognize CHES teaching excellence.
Taylor, an instructor, has been a vital contributor to the College since becoming a clothing, textiles and interior design instructor in 2006. He is responsible for the senior clothing selection and recommended using the yearly event as a Fashion for Life fundraiser.
Over the past year, Taylor served as a member of four CHES committees and was involved with invitation design and event planning in addition to merchandise development for “Little AL,” a spectator football toy. He also worked with graduates for the Huntsville Fashion Art Fusion Runway Show at the Huntsville Museum of Art.
“As a teacher creating a pathway for his students – from novice to professional – Brian provides a role model for his students that proves invaluable as they execute the tricky world of fashion design,” said Dr. Shirley Foster, assistant professor and chair of UA’s clothing, textile and interior design department, in her nomination letter on behalf of Taylor. “He is resourceful, talented and articulate.”
Taylor devised a plan to involve members of the fashion industry with his students as they completed their final collections in 2014. This idea was a basis for the development of an advisory board for the fashion design concentration.
Taylor earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UA in 1999 and 2005, respectively. For his master’s project, he created and developed the nonprofit organization Planting Stitches. He received two grants from UA’s Office of Community Affairs to fund the project, which worked to match talented hand sewers in the Black Belt with companies that market hand-made apparel.
Taylor has taught multiple classes at UA. Outside of academia, he has worked as a designer for Dillard’s, developing body styles and flats and designing two junior’s private label brands, among other initiatives.
“He represents the future of our college,” said Foster. “He has respect for the past and the desire and ability to incorporate the needs of the future into his teaching, which helps our students grow ever more competitive in the work place.”
