interior design (INTD) program
The program in interior design is planned to prepare students for professional careers in residential and nonresidential interior design. Career opportunities include employment with interior design studios, interior design divisions of architectural firms, and retail establishments. The coursework is designed to prepare students to apply to become registered interior designers. The interior design program is accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).
Program Mission
The mission of the Interior Design Program at The University of Alabama is to provide students with competent entry level interior design skills with which to address the aesthetic, psychological, and environmental issues inherent in the health, safety, and welfare of people in interior space. The Program seeks to develop in students an understanding of the responsibilities of a designer and the importance of design in the lives of all people.

Based on the above mission and goals, The University of Alabama’s Interior Design Program follows a logical sequence in the curriculum, which begins with knowledge and skill foundations that build from simple to more complex requirements with emphasis on the design process, critical thinking, user needs, and environmental awareness.
- Meet the design challenges presented by human needs, which are based in age, gender, health, socioeconomics, and culture within the practice of interior design.
- Recognize the value of human diversity and to develop appreciation and sensitivity for design based in different traditions.
- Effectively solve design problems through collaboration in groups and between disciplines.
- Meet their responsibilities as professionals faced with making responsible design choices for people and the natural environment.
