Overview of the department

The Department of Clothing, Textiles and Interior Design offers two academic majors: interior design (INTD) and apparel and textiles (AT), with concentrations in fashion retailing and apparel design. Students in both AT concentrations take 24 hours of common courses. Each student takes 36 additional hours of coursework for the concentration in apparel design and 37 or 38 additional hours of coursework for the concentration in fashion retailing.

Apparel and Textiles

The AT major prepares students for merchandising, management, design, and production careers in retailing and/or the textile and apparel industry. The major is also appropriate for students who are interested in pursuing a wide variety of entrepreneurial opportunities in fashion retailing, textiles, and/or apparel. Students may concentrate in apparel design or fashion retailing.

Interior Design

The program strives to create student motivation for excellence based in the knowledge of the principles and elements of design and their appropriate application to the built environment. Faculty are committed to providing opportunities for students to develop a multicultural and global awareness of human needs through class projects, lectures, and other opportunities.

Graduate Study in Apparel and Textiles

Students in the graduate program may concentrate in the behavioral aspects of clothing; the international aspects of textiles and apparel; or historic costume and textiles. The program prepares students for careers in college teaching, research, extension, education administration, marketing, consumer service, product development/evaluation, and entrepreneurship.
